Why Automatic Car Washes Are Destroying Your Paint

18 Jan 2026 6 min read

Drive-through brush washes use stiff bristles loaded with grit from the cars before yours. Every pass introduces micro-scratches into the clear coat — scratches that catch direct sunlight and create the swirl-mark spider-web every detailer spends hours polishing out.

Touchless washes aren't much better

Touchless systems rely on harsh alkaline detergents to lift dirt without contact. Used regularly, they strip wax and sealants, dry out trim, and accelerate clear-coat oxidation. They're a better option than brush washes — but they're still not a substitute for a proper hand wash.

What to do instead

  • Two-bucket hand wash at home (one for shampoo, one for rinse)
  • Use a quality pH-neutral shampoo
  • Dry with a fresh, clean microfibre — never with a chamois that's been on the floor
  • Book a maintenance detail every two to three months

If you must use a wash

Touchless every now and then on a neglected vehicle won't end the world. But if your car is coated, sealed or has any kind of paint protection, a single brush wash can void the warranty and undo a thousand dollars of work in 90 seconds.
